Young people (Gen Z) are actually less interested in professional sports than their millennial counterparts. Knowing this, the NBA is focusing on how to get younger audiences more engaged with the league as they scopes for the years ahead.

This is a personal project, so everything was hypothetical! I imagined that the NBA was looking for an agency to help them strategize and that my team was preparing a pitch to win their business. I acted as the deck designer, creating a beautiful and dynamic template that my team would fill with ideas and copywriting.

Visual Identity

I started brainstorming how the deck should look—colors, typography, and imagery, and what feel the visual style would create. I thought it would make sense to take inspiration from a recent and successful undertaking by the NBA—the In-Season Tournament—and focused on its retro vibe created by the use of bright colors and fun type. Additionally, as this pitch is all about looking ahead and towards the league’s bright future, bringing in elements of modern design would work well. I assembled moodboards, exploring directions that seamlessly combines retro and modern.

The final art direction leverages bold and bright tonal pairing and color blocking, duotone and cutout imagery, and geometry. The direction lightly refers to the token scrapbooking style, albeit with a more clean and seamless construction.

Iterative Process

I played around with layouts, exploring how the images would be arranged or layered with text. I also looked at the template for each slide: how the page numbers, section titles, and other header/footer information would be presented. Going through an iterative process, I created multiple versions of different types of slides, such as infographics, breakers, and storytelling slides.

The template acts as a flexible guide. It shows the approach to the visual style of infographics, charts and graphs, and how to layer cull bleed imagery with cutout elements. It also lays out the baseline to the coloring and tonal range of images and how text is formatted.

Final Deck

This was a solo personal project, answering a hypothetical ask. As such, no strategists or copywriters worked on this project. However, I wanted to try my hand at conducting research and creating narrative content , so I sectioned out the deck into topics I felt related well to the ask, populated the deck with my templated slides, and finally filled out a few with real content (leaving the rest with placeholder text). Below is the official style guide, followed by the entire deck with nearly 40 slides; feel free to click through!
